Not so casually, please…

If only it were as easy as on a bumper car at the fairground: just pull the steering wheel round – completely cool and casual with just a single hand – and the car turns. Some people try to manoeuvre their vehicle out of a parking space in a similarly laid-back style. And that’s generally not a problem thanks to the power steering. But the crunching of the tyres on the asphalt is not a good sign, as this wears the tyres down like an eraser. And what many people don’t realise is that the steering gear, which transfers the rotary movements of the steering wheel to the front wheels by means of a sliding movement, also is subjected to additional wear at this moment.

This is because the mechanics of the front axle are also stressed when steering the vehicle when stationary, as the steering needs to push extra strongly against the stationary wheel. Depending on the type of vehicle, the steering gear and parts such as the servo pump are subjected to heavy loads and wear out more quickly. Although the rack-and-pinion steering system widely used today is relatively rugged, it is not indestructible either. Even accidental contact with the kerb can have serious consequences. The pinion on the steering rack, for example, can be knocked out or gear wheels can break off. In addition, leaking shaft seals or a defective power steering pump can cause the oil to leak, resulting in the gearbox running dry. Dirt from a torn steering boot also accelerates wear.

Among the possible consequences are that the car no longer drives completely straight, the steering has too much play, becomes stiff and/or makes noises. So, taking the bumper car approach while steering is not the best idea, even in tight situations. Instead, let the vehicle start to roll a little before turning the steering wheel. We also recommend straightening the steering if the parking area is not on a slope, as this relieves the strain on the entire axle geometry and prevents premature wear. Furthermore, if the steering wheel is turned while parked, the tyre sidewall is often crushed and/or damaged.
