Still pulling the strings

It is ubiquitous in automotive technology. It has been providing reliable service in vehicle construction for over 100 years: The Bowden cable, named after its Irish inventor Ernest Monnington Bowden (1859-1904). This device, also known as a cable pull, transmits movements and forces reliably and simply – for example, in the manual parking brake in a car, which is operated by a handbrake lever or a foot pedal. Cable pulls in parking brakes are inexpensive compared to modern electric servomotors.

However, over time, they can cause problems due to mechanical wear and their susceptibility to corrosion – i.e., rust! So before everything grinds to a halt, AIC offers 138 cable pulls for conventional parking brakes for 8,890 applications.
