The sound of turbulence

A report from a US hearing aid supplier in Texas has recently caught our attention: When driving with the windows open, the sound of air turbulence quickly exposes those in the car to a constant noise level of 89 decibels, which is roughly equivalent to the sound of a door slamming.

Of course, there’s nothing quite like feeling the wind in your hair on the motorway in the heat of summer – perhaps with your favourite songs blaring out at full volume. But in the long run, this is not healthy for a number of reasons, including those mentioned above. It’s better to roll up the windows and turn on the ventilation.

If it doesn’t work, or only works intermittently or at low power, the fan motor may be the problem. Admittedly, this is not actually a classic wear part. However, over the course of a long car life, it can of course also stop working. There are several possible causes for this. For example, the fan motor may jam or become stuck due to a damaged bearing or a warped fan blade. Or moisture may have penetrated the system and damaged the electronics or caused general corrosion. Another possibility is that inferior replacement parts were installed during a previous replacement.
