Don’t get caught out in the cold

Given the current energy prices, hardly anyone is hoping for a harsh winter at the moment. However, icy sub-zero temperatures not only increase heating costs, but also endanger the functionality and safety of vehicle technology. If the temperatures drop into the double-digit sub-zero range – which, despite climate change, is still the case in many parts of Germany – the AdBlue in the car can freeze and the car stops. Damage to the delivery and metering unit may also occur.

Normally, the heating element in the tank unit or the heating wire in the metering line from the pump to the injection valve should prevent such problems. This happens both when the car is running and after a longer idle period, when the heater thaws the urea solution that is so important for the SCR system. But natural wear and tear, a short circuit caused by a defective level sensor, for example, or simple interruptions in the component are all reasons why the heater stops working. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, this may be indicated by one or more error messages.
